MA in Applied Spanish Linguistics:

The Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced work in Spanish linguistics and further develop their fluency in the Spanish language. In response to the growing importance of Spanish in the United States, this program provides a broad sense in the structure, usage and development of modern Spanish. Thus, the degree is designed to suit the needs of future teachers and teachers already in services, as well as students with career goals other than teaching. With its strong foundation in linguistics, the M.A. in Applied Spanish Linguistics also serves as preparation for doctoral level work in theoretical or applied linguistics or language acquisition.

In addition to meeting the requirements of the University and the College of Arts and Letters, students must meet the requirements specified below.

Requirements for Admission in ASL:

The program is available to students from U.S. institutions with a B.A. in Spanish, or a B.A. in linguistics with coursework in Spanish at the 400 level, and to students from other countries with B.A. equivalent degrees in Spanish philology. Students with a B.A. in Spanish who have not taken SPN 425, or its equivalent, may be admitted with the provision that they will take SPN 425 and its prerequisite, LIN 401, during their first semester.

Requirements for completion of Program:

A total of 30 credits is required for the degree of M.A. in Applied Spanish Linguistics. Twenty-four of these credits must come from the core and practicum courses; the other six credits can be earned by taking two additional electives. In addition to these course requirements, students in this program are required to demonstrate intermediate proficiency in one other romance language, to be determined in consultation with the advisor. The program is available only under Plan B (final examination, without a thesis). The graduate advisor must approve the student's program of study.

The following are required coursework towards the M.A. in Applied Spanish Linguistics:

Take the following 6 core classes (18 credits):

ROM 803: Current Approaches to Romance Language Instruction (3 credits)

SPN 805: Evolution of the Spanish Language (3 credits)

SPN 806: Topics in Hispanic Linguistics (3 credits, to be taken twice for a maximum of 6 credits)

Rotating topics are: Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics I: Phonology, Morphology and Syntax, and Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics II: Variation and Languages in Contact

ROM 801: Topics in Applied Romance Linguistics (3 credits)Rotating topics are Current Research in Romance Language Acquisition and Translation

ROM 802: Topics in Theoretical Romance Linguistics (3 credits)

Topic is Language Changes in Romance

Take 6 credits of practicum courses, to be chosen from the following:

SPN 890: Practicum in Teaching Composition, Grammar, Phonetics or Reading (1 credit, may be taken three times)

SPN 891: Summer Seminar Abroad for Spanish Teachers (2-3 credits, may be taken twice)

AL 881: Special Topics in Teaching with Technology in Arts and Humanities (1-3 credits)

Take two additional linguistics courses (6 credits) from the following:

LIN 434: Syntax (3 credits)

LIN 450: Child Language Acquisition (3 credits)

ENG/LIN 461: Second Language Acquisition (3 credits)

ENG/LIN 861: Advanced Studies in Second Language Acquisition (3 credits)

LIN 471: Sociolinguistics (3 credits)

LIN 871: Advanced Studies in Sociolinguistics (3 credits)

Demonstrate proficiency in another Romance language (by successfully completing a course such as PRT 490, Portuguese for Romance Speakers, or by examination)

Pass a final certifying examination based on coursework and the departmental reading list for the Master of Arts Degree in Applied Spanish Linguistics.
